The entire Chews Lane precinct, two-thirds of a city block, was revitalised to create an award-winning and vibrant mixed-use development.
In 2005 Chews Lane was a dilapidated service lane with its buildings in a state of disrepair. Now it is the heart of a precinct providing around 15,000m2 of office premises, 19 retail stores at ground level, six food and beverage outlets in the lane itself, and a new apartment tower that straddles the lane and provides 97 apartments.
Its busy inner city location posed particular construction challenges. Dust sheets were used to prevent dirt escaping, noise control constrained work hours, and pedestrian safety and site access needed careful attention.
‘Chews Lane represents everything we are looking for in terms of good urban design... four buildings were restored, a heritage facade preserved, and five new buildings added to provide a healthy mix of retail, office and residential units.’
Connal Townsend, CEO, Property Council of New Zealand
