PROJECT TYPE: COMMERCIAL BUILDINGS
USE: CARPARK, OFFICE AND RETAIL
LOCATION: VICTORIA ST – WILLIS ST
CLIENT: WILLIS BOND AND CO
ARCHITECTS: ATHFIELD ARCHITECTS
PROJECT TIMEFRAME: 2005-2007
A mix of new and refurbished commercial office and retail buildings is a key element of the award-winning Chews Lane precinct.
Four existing buildings were strengthened and refurbished to retain their heritage value and to create more effective interior spaces.
Two eight-story concrete podia were constructed on opposite sides of Chews Lane, spanning Willis and Victoria Streets. The north podium houses Land Transport New Zealand in premium office space with ground level retail.
The south podium is mainly car parking, with office pods occupying the premium street-front spaces. One new building retained a six-storey heritage facade, while the main structure behind was demolished.
The original structural elements feature in some new offices, creating a unique working environment. All office interiors meet the need for high-end contemporary fit-outs.
