IRL GLYCOL SYNTHESIS FACILITY
PROJECT TYPE: COMMERCIAL BUILDINGS
USE: RESEARCH FACILITY
LOCATION: GRACEFIELD, LOWER HUTT
CLIENT: INDUSTRIAL RESEARCH LIMITED
ARCHITECTS: PYNENBURG AND COLLINS
PROJECT TIMEFRAME: 1999
The Glycol Synthesis Facility is the largest capital project undertaken by Industrial Research Limited, a world-class science institute. Bio-pharmaceutical research and development is a key area for IRL, and the new facility enables the institute to work with biotechnology clients around the globe.
The project posed a number of challenges. The building represents the public face of IRL in the area, so integration of design and technology was critical.
We also had to meet strict requirements for hygiene and product and human safety. One solution was a flame-proof fully serviced process hall, into which different processes within isolation cells could be accommodated over time.
